Educators and industry professionals understand how important it is to teach our children to protect and respect the world they live in – today and in the future. Water conservation education is paramount in this effort.

In fact, concern over 2002 Texas Water Development Board projections suggesting Texans would face a significant water shortfall during drought conditions, led to the passage of water conservation initiatives during the 2003 Session of the Texas Legislature. The Water Conservation Implementation Task Force was also created to, among other things, educate the public on their role in the conservation of this invaluable natural resource.

Remember the old saying: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”? Well, we don’t agree with that. But we do agree that it is extremely effective to teach the “young dogs” good habits – positive habits they will carry with them for a lifetime. This is where you come in.

The need for educating our children about the importance of water conservation -- and, just as important, showing them specific ways to conserve -- is a critical component to ensuring our future water supply.

For years, the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District has partnered with local Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs) and other water industry professionals to bring a specially tailored version of the National Waterwise Program’s innovative classroom experience to our local schools. In fact, the program is now active in over 33 school districts, reaching 65,000 4th and 5th grade students! In Harris and Ft. Bend counties, every single school district is in some part utilizing the Waterwise program.

Why Waterwise?

We understand the stressors that teachers face today -- the pressures of TAKS/TEKS, limited class time for in depth projects, complicated by their own hectic schedules-- all reasons we chose this excellent program. Waterwise addresses these issues and plans their curriculum accordingly.

The Goods

Last year, new Waterwise kit packaging was introduced – a cool, smart square box design with a convenient handle to ease transporting home.

And because it's also important to keep up with today's technology... a new version of the CD-ROM game 'Adventures in Green Valley' is under development and will provide another interesting way to entice students into incorporating water conservation into their daily lives.
