We work hard to keep teachers and students excited about participating in this
program and with continued feedback from those who participate and continued education on our end, we plan to stay at the forefront of water conservation education.
The "Water Lady"
Through the years, students have nicknamed her "The Water Lady", "Principal Waters", and even "The Aquanator"... but we simply call her amazing. For over
15 years, our own Waterwise program coordinator, Susan Brown, has shown an unwavering commitment to the success of Waterwise. With her hands-on exhibit in tow, Susan visits as many classrooms as possible, reiterating the strong Waterwise message with her energetic spirit and eye-opening experiments.
Children

It was Susan Brown’s first trip to San Jacinto Elementary and the school’s 4th grade classes were eagerly anticipating her arrival. They’d been learning about water conservation and the visit by the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District’s “Water Lady” would be the hands-on experience that would tie all their lessons together.
When Brown walked in with her mobile sink and partitioned water tank with two shower heads, the kid’s eyes grew large and the room went silent. Who was this woman with the big smile, and why was she pulling along such a goofy-looking contraption? They would soon find out.
In less than an hour, Brown’s energetic presentation - consisting of important facts, an entertaining slide show, and the crowd-pleaser, a hands-on experiment on how much water is saved using a low-flow showerhead – left the group excited and ready to go home to try out all the new water conservation techniques. And with Waterwise kits in hand (courtesy of Subsidence District partners), they had the materials to make it happen.
“The hands-on activities seem to allow the students to gain a better understanding of the different concepts introduced,” said 4th grade teacher, Jennifer Cooper-Fontenot. “It’s a great way to keep them engaged in follow-up activities and the kits contain really high quality materials that make an immediate difference at home. We truly appreciate the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District and our school’s sponsors for bringing this fun and effective program to San Jacinto Elementary.” |
